The Killing Kind A Charlie Parker Thriller John Connolly Books Reviews

As a fan of John Connolly since his first novel, I was excited to read The Killing Kind, his latest effort involving a murdered girl, smarmy, swindling preachers, and a missing religious cult in Maine -- the Aroostook Baptists. Charlie Parker, as always, was wonderfully written as were Angel and Louis, despite a few disappointing stereotypical lines of dialogue from these two. I don't recall from the first couple of books Louis speaking the way he did in the Killing Kind and it was a bit distracting...other than that, they were great. The character of Pudd was just plain creepy and a wonderful creation.
The book starts off at a quick pace, but then slows a bit in the middle -- so much so that I was beginning to feel a bit disappointed which is why I rank it at 4 stars and not the full 5 -- but the ending was out of this world!!! When Charlie finds what everyone was looking for, I was literally open mouthed with surprise (and disgust!). It was GREAT!! It really makes me wonder where John Connolly comes up with such gruesome stuff -- I hope he's getting the psychiatric help he needs. He puts Barker and King to shame.
Also, the ending shows a touching side of Charlie as he's called upon to try to rescue Angel...it was a nice touch and not overdone. All in all, this book was terrific and I can't wait to get the next in the series!

Reading the Charlie Parker series again after a 5 year hiatus. This is rare for me given how much good stuff is left to explore out there but in no way am I disappointed. These novels are great literature no matter the genre and they continue to surprise and delight; from the light banter to the serious soul searching to the aching nostalgia...so good!
I suggest you read this book during the daylight hours because the plot is very creepy and mind boggling. The central characters are well developed and each has their own mystery for the reader to discover as you read deeper and deeper into the book. Connolly has not left out any of his creativity in his Charlie Parker character. The only negative that I found was the diversion at times from the story line as the reader has to wade through a paper written by the deceased that is fed to the reader section by section at various points in the book. The information contained in the paper does help a little to explain some points in the story, but does not add to any of the thrill written in the overall book. None the less the reader will enjoy this edition of a Charlie Parker mystery. I suggest you pick one up today.
The third installment in the Charlie "Bird" Parker mysteries brings Bird deeper into a knowledge of his connection with the paranormal, specifically his connection with those who have died by violence, who demand that he avenge them. All he wants is peace, trying to make a living as a private eye doing miserable scut work cheating spouses, withheld child support and the like. He's also repairing his grandfather's home, hoping to settle in and have a quiet life. But the dead won't let him rest, and in this episode, one of those dead is a former girlfriend. Although their relationship was over many years ago, Bird has residual guilt over his behavior to her and is reluctantly drawn into an investigation of her supposed suicide. On the bright side, it looks as if his new love interest is back, and of course his buddies, Angel and Louis, are on hand to assist him. On the dark side, though, is a great deal of darkness, dating back to an esoteric religious sect that disappeared decades ago. I was somewhat less invested in this book than in the first two, perhaps because some of the backstory is told through excerpts from one victim's research, which includes other documents, such as letters. This twice-removed information reduces the emotional impact of the story. But there are eight more novels in this series (as of 2012), and I'm looking forward to the next one, which I trust will be more direct and which I'm pretty sure will be even more aligned with the psychic powers that Bird has so unwillingly developed.
I have loved all John Connolly's Charlie Parker books that I have read to date. They are very intense and emotionally draining, so for me, I do need a break whenever I finish reading one. I usually choose to read something light and easy after I've spent 3-5 days hanging out with Charlie, Louis and Angel. The thing is, after being away from Charlie and his friends for more than a month, I find myself wanting to spend time with them again. The quality of the writing is superb and each book continues from the last, but proceeds onto a new mystery/adventure to solve. I can't recommend this series enough. Start with the first book and you'll be hooked!
I bought the entire Charlie Parker series on a whim, and I have to say it will be a chore to read them all. John Connolly seems to like writing about gruesome or sadistic murders (in the first one in the series his wife is skinned alive, yuck!), which would probably interest a shrink. Also, there are so many different names in each story and so much jumping back and forth between locations and timeframes, that you almost need an index to keep track of them all. Not the best bedtime read if you want to avoid nightmares!

Other than that, I think he is a good writer and I do like his occasional attempts at humor, which lighten the mood somewhat.
