I've been buying a lot of new authors in the mystery genre, but few of them keep me interested. This one didn't either. Stock characters, standard plot. Boring hero was the Kiss of Death. Deleting it from my Kindle.

Remix Lexi Revellian 9780956642202 Books Reviews

I had no idea what to expect, but after several disappointments with 'established', old favorite authors I wanted to try some new voices. REMIX sounded like fun, and the price was right (I think I paid $2.99 for it).

What a great surprise to discover that Ms. Revellian's writing is so readable and easy (although I'm sure it's not for her!). I loved the characters, completely believed the set-up and resolution, and thoroughly enjoyed the story from beginning to end.

There was nothing average or expected about these characters or the situation they were in - how often does a self-employed artisan find herself embroiled in solving a crime with a drop dead gorgeous, world renowned rock-star, after all? On the other hand, every bit of it was believable (within Chick-Lit parameters, that is) and I couldn't wait to see what happened from one moment to the next. The writing is really fresh, and effortless in a way that is totally different than most of what I've read up until now (which is a LOT). Caz, Ric and all of the rest of the characters seemed so real that I feel as though I would recognize them immediately if I ran into them in the coffee shop this afternoon!

As said, I do read a lot and I really liked the change from outrageous stories involving international espionage or politics, military-grade weaponry, gore galore, or sordid sexual predators. And, while I have no problems with a well written sensual or sexual encounter, I did appreciate the fact that in this book there was plenty of tension but no minutely described sex - it made the romance and emotion of the relationship between Caz and Ric much more real for me, without the distraction of trying to imagine what limb had been placed where and how hard or fast something was happening.

Several American reviewers have commented on their difficulties with the British slang and vernacular employed by Ms. Revellian, but I have to say that I have many British friends and I could hear them so clearly in her use of the language - it sounds absolutely honest and modern to me, which was so refreshing. I'm sorry to read the complaints about having to stop reading in order to look up a term, because, for me, this relaxed use of our common language was one of the things I enjoyed most about this writing.

Back to the story - well paced, a wonderful dash through the London that Londoners really live in, fun characters with interesting and fun jobs, and a cute and charming dog on top of all of it! And a simple crime that keeps all of the players involved, keeps the reader rooting for the good guy while not being completely sure who the bad guys are until well into the story, and is resolved fairly and satisfactorily - all of the elements desired for the Happy Ever After.

Not the Great American Novel, or even the Great British Novel. But far more enjoyable than so many of those are, and well worth 5 stars for me.
To be honest, my expectations were not very high. Most of the books that I am reading now are from Bookbub, when I was ordering books rather indiscriminately. (I like Bookbub, but I am now looking at the reviews of any book that sounds interesting and ask myself if I would really read the book.) So I have been reading the first chapter or so of the books that I have ordered and, if I am not hooked, I go on to the next. This book is written in first person present, which I usually dislike. I was waiting for the moment when I would discard the book. . . . but I kept reading. I had to know what happened next. I have reached the end of the book and I still want to know what happened next. The plot is interesting and the characters are quirky or odd, but believable. I like that the protagonist makes rocking horses. Either Revellian makes rocking horses, too, or she did an excellent job researching them. Some of the plot is a little improbable, but the story is so good that you are willing to just believe and go with it. Is this great literature? No. Is this a fun and fast read? Very much so. It is a cool mystery, a lovely romance, and an interesting look into the lives of a rock band. I'm pretty picky in what I read, in that I want a good dose of humor, a credible romance, and an interesting story to back it up. I don't particularly like explicit gratuitous sex, but a sex scene short of pornography that is appropriate in the situation is fine. Everything here is appropriate. I am not always looking for a meaningful work of great importance, but basically just want something that is hard to put down. This qualifies.
Remix was a great read from start to finish. After Caz finds a "dead" rock star sleeping on her property, she gets involved in helping him prove he's innocent of murder. At first she's reluctant, but she truly believes in Ric's innocence. I'll stop here, so as not to add spoilers.

Caz and Ric have flaws, but are likable and believable, and secondary characters are also well-drawn. Twists and turns kept me guessing and there was plenty of suspense to keep me reading. Descriptions of Caz's work as a restorer of rocking horses were a fun and fascinating element of the story. Author Lexi Revellian seems to really know her subject.

The book is fast-paced, well-written, and reaches a satisfying conclusion. Recommended.
